Subsidised Travel

Students may be eligible for government-subsidised travel, or a part subsidy, and can apply for a Smart Card, which is used as an electronic bus pass. Click here for how to obtain a Smart Card in three simple steps.

Information about subsidised school travel, and relevant application forms, can be found on the School Transport Assistance Scheme website. Parents and students are also encouraged to read our Code of Conduct for school passenger travel.

Primary

Primary school students are eligible for full government-subsidised travel to their nearest school, provided they live more than 3.2km from the nearest state primary school.

Parents who choose to send their child to a school other than the closest will be required to pay a fare from the nearest school to the school attended.

Secondary

Secondary students living more than 4.8km from their nearest state secondary school are eligible for full government subsidised travel.

Students travelling over the river into either side of Mackay will be required to pay a top up fare as they are travelling past their nearest school.

All secondary students receiving government-subsidised travel must have a Smart Card and without it will have to pay a cash fare to travel.
